Igniting Brilliance, Forging Connections: The BWEEMS Conference is a celebration of Black Women in Science

The BWEEMS Conference is more than just an event—it's a transformative experience that embodies the heart of our mission. Born from a desire to create genuine connections in a field where Black women have historically been underrepresented, this biannual gathering has become a cornerstone of our community.

From Virtual Roots to Vibrant Reality: The Evolution of BWEEMS and Our Conference

BWEEMS emerged during the 2020 global pandemic, a time of isolation that paradoxically brought us together. Through dozens of virtual events, panels, and workshops, we built a vibrant community of over 500 members across 22 countries. While grateful for the digital connections forged, we yearned for something more tangible.

In January 2023, that dream became reality with our inaugural in-person conference at the University of Miami. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary—a safe space created by and for Black women in ecology, evolution, and marine science fields.

years of anticipation culminate in a powerful gathering where we nurture growth and forge lasting connections

Every two years, we bring together brilliant minds who are eager to learn, share, and work together. The BWEEMS Conference is designed to foster meaningful interactions, emphasizing the human side of science. Here, professionals bond over shared goals and experiences in a collaborative setting that goes beyond traditional presentations.

Our conference blends cutting-edge research presentations with interactive workshops, mentorship opportunities, and networking events. We balance scientific discourse with community building and wellness activities, creating a holistic experience that nurtures both professional growth and personal well-being for all attendees.

At the BWEEMS Conference, we cultivate excellence through a holistic approach to science and community

The ripple effects of our gatherings extend far beyond the event itself. Collaborations forged here have led to groundbreaking research projects, mentorship relationships that span continents, and a growing network of support for Black women in EEMS. By creating a space where we are the norm rather than the exception, we're actively reshaping the narrative of who belongs in these scientific fields.

We're not just attending an event—we're building the future of our fields, together.
