Three Fields, One Mission
Today's global challenges demand innovative scientific solutions that bridge multiple disciplines. Through integrated research across three critical fields, we're advancing our understanding of the natural systems that impact everything from human health to economic stability to community resilience.
Ecology
Understanding the complex relationships between living systems that influence community health, resource sustainability, and economic stability
Did you know?
Healthy ecosystems provide substantial economic benefits, estimated at $125-140 trillion annually, supporting food security, disaster protection, and more. BWEEMS researchers work to preserve these critical services for future generations.
Evolution
Studying how species adapt and change to reveal solutions for current and future global challenges
Did you know?
Species are adapting to climate change at unprecedented rates, with some showing evolutionary responses within just a few generations. Our scientists track these changes to predict and protect biodiversity.
Marine Science
Investigating ocean systems that drive climate patterns, food security, and coastal community resilience
Did you know?
Coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass meadows store carbon up to 40 times faster than tropical forests. BWEEMS researchers are pioneering studies to enhance these natural climate solutions.
Science Driving Solutions
Our work addresses critical challenges that impact communities, economies, and ecosystems worldwide:

Bridging Research and Communities Through Science
"Science thrives when diverse voices lead. Together, we break barriers, drive discovery, and shape a future where Black women in STEM transform the world."
BWEEMS
Science Driving Solutions
Behind groundbreaking discoveries stands a community of accomplished scientists leading their fields. From prestigious research institutions to field sites worldwide, our members are pioneering new approaches to understanding and protecting our planet.
Moronke Harris, a PhD student at the University of Victoria, explores the intersection of deep-sea mining, seafloor mapping, and vent microbe biopharmaceutical potential while also founding ‘The Imaginative Scientist’, a brand that merges science communication with artistry to engage and inspire audiences.
Advancing Science Through Action
Through six core programs, BWEEMS creates pathways for scientific excellence and collaboration. Each program is strategically designed to support our members' research, amplify their impact, and advance discovery in ecology, evolution, and marine science.
In Their Words: Why BWEEMS?
Hear from our members about how BWEEMS' global scientific community strengthens their work and advances discovery. From research labs to policy offices, field sites to federal agencies, our diverse network of scientists, practitioners, and experts powers breakthrough science across academia, government, nonprofit, and private sectors.
